Pioneering Innovation In Structural Engineering With DELTABEAM®

December, 20, 2024

Ontario-based structural engineering firm, co-elevate (formerly Gray & Fick), is known for its creative approach to structural engineering.

Founded in 1973, co-elevate has spent over 50 years pushing boundaries and rethinking design possibilities. The firm integrates innovative solutions that align seamlessly with its clients' vision, tackling projects with a passion for excellence and a commitment to sustainable practices.

Co-elevate is innovating in the senior living sector by utilizing Peikko's DELTABEAM® slim-floor system. These composite steel beams, which pair with prefabricated slabs such as hollowcore span over 25 feet on average with only 8 inches of depth, including the deck. The system also allows for quick installation while enabling more flexible and open architectural designs. By integrating DELTABEAM®, co-elevate is setting a new standard in senior living, combining safety, aesthetics, and innovation to create functional and attractive spaces.

Co-elevate has utilized DELTABEAM® in several of their peopleCare Communities projects, which were designed with SRM Architects + Urban Designers. Co-elevate has found Peikko's DELTABEAM® Composite Beams to be a valuable solution for these projects and appreciates the service and cooperation provided by Peikko's engineering team. Rachel Hawkins, Partner at co-elevate says:

"Peikko's DELTABEAM® has proven to be an invaluable solution for many of our projects. We greatly appreciate the exceptional service and insightful design input from Peikko's engineering team, which have been instrumental in our successful collaborations."

This collaboration is exemplified in their work with peopleCare Communities and SRM Architects + Urban Designers on several long-term care facilities.

DELTABEAM®: Redefining Senior Living Spaces

Peikko's DELTABEAM® technology offers significant advantages for senior living homes.

Open Spaces with Minimum Columns

DELTABEAM® allows for large, open spaces with fewer columns, creating a more spacious and flexible environment for residents.

Slim Floor Structure

The slim floor design maximizes ceiling height, providing a sleek, modern aesthetic and a feeling of spaciousness.

Integrated Fireproofing

DELTABEAM® includes built-in fireproofing, enhancing safety without the need for additional fireproofing measures such as intumescent paint.

Fast and Safe Construction

The prefabricated nature of DELTABEAM® speeds up construction and reduces on-site labor, minimizing disruption.

Flexible Layouts

DELTABEAM®'s design flexibility allows for easy reconfiguration of spaces, ideal for adapting to the evolving needs of senior living facilities.

peopleCare Stratford: A New Standard in Senior Care

Co-elevate and Peikko are collaborating with peopleCare Communities and SRM Architects + Urban Designers on a new 288-bed long-term care home in Stratford, Ontario. Located at 3188 Vivian Line 37, this project will showcase the benefits of DELTABEAM® in creating a modern and comfortable senior living environment.

DELTABEAM® will be instrumental in achieving the design goals, including:

  • Continuous beams with single-story columns: This design creates open, flowing spaces that promote a sense of community and ease of movement.
  • Increased headroom: DELTABEAM®'s slim floor structure maximizes ceiling height, creating a more spacious and airy feel.
  • Elimination of fireproofing: The integrated fireproofing in DELTABEAM® removes the need for additional measures, streamlining construction and enhancing the aesthetic appeal.

Construction on the peopleCare Stratford project is set to begin soon.
