Akademiska Hus is making a major investment with a new, modern, and sustainable building at Umeå Campus!

Umeå University has long faced a shortage of examination halls. In 2022, a lease agreement was signed between Umeå University and Akademiska Hus, leading to the construction of a 9,500 square meter building on the Umeå campus. The new five-story building will include facilities for teaching, study areas, offices, and a café, and will be directly connected to the existing campus facilities in Umeå.

The design of the new building has been crucial in creating an optimal property in terms of both purpose and environmental sustainability. Since the demand for examination halls is higher during certain parts of the academic terms, the premises are being designed to be adaptable to varying needs and requirements. During periods of lower demand for examination halls, the spaces will instead be used as study rooms.

The entire project places a strong emphasis on the environment by selecting construction methods and materials that contribute to a low climate impact. The building will receive "Miljöbyggnad Guld" environmental certification, which is the highest level of environmental standards.

Peikko has supplied DELTABEAM® Green Composite Beams, made from over 90% recycled steel, helping to meet the project's environmental goals. The entire frame consists of 1,013 meters of DELTABEAM® Green, (166 beams in total), with a combined weight of 115 tons.
