The Kemi bioproduct mill is set to become the most efficient wood processing plant in the northern hemisphere.

With an investment of EUR 2.02 billion, it represents the largest investment ever made by the Finnish forest industry. Operations are scheduled to commence in Q3 2023.

Peikko has played a crucial role in this substantial project by supplying a wide range of connection components to Consolis Parma, the primary precast manufacturer for the project.

Describing the magnitude and complexity of the project, Business Manager Kimmo Varvikko states, "This project has been exceptionally large and demanding." Peikko's contributions have included the delivery of thousands of products such as WELDA® anchor plates, HPKM® and BOLDA® column shoes, HPM® rebar anchor bolts, PPM® high-strength anchor bolts, PCs® consoles, COPRA® anchoring couplers, and ARBOX® joint reinforcement systems. In total, 16,000 concrete elements were transported to the site.

Peikko's involvement commenced in July 2021 and continued for a year. During peak periods, other Peikko factories in Germany, Slovakia, and Lithuania also joined in the delivery process.

Kari-Pekka Heinonen served as the Project Manager at Consolis Parma and brought valuable prior experience from a bioproduct mill project in Äänekoski, completed in 2017.

Heinonen explains, "Elements for this project were manufactured in six Consolis Parma factories in Finland."

Varvikko acknowledges that the project faced its share of challenges due to the busy summer season and the implementation of a new ERP system at Peikko. However, after overcoming initial difficulties, the involved parties established a routine of regular meetings, enabling Peikko to swiftly realign with the delivery schedule.

The northern location of Kemi posed additional logistical challenges. Each delivery had a tight timeframe on-site, leaving no room for errors. Active communication and meticulous planning emerged as crucial factors contributing to the project's success.

Heinonen reflects on the experience, saying, "There will always be challenges in a project like this, but when everyone is ready to be flexible and approaches it with a human touch, the end result will be commendable."

Varvikko emphasizes the significance of close cooperation with the customer in executing a project of this magnitude. Despite the substantial orders, they were well-timed, and Peikko had precise delivery schedules in place. This level of precision enabled Peikko to consistently deliver the required products to the site on schedule.
